This week’s TOTW is an intriguing blend from Dragonfly Teas – their Swirling Mist white tea is completely organic and according to the recycling-friendly paper packaging, is grown in Fujian province, China. Dragonfly Teas are a family run British company who have been growing and selling tea for over 100 years, and are members of the Organic Food Federation, Fairtrade Foundation and Rainforest Alliance.
If you know about white tea, then you will know that it is a very delicate tea, comprised of young tea buds and leaves that have not been processed or oxidised at all, just gently dried. This results in a very smooth flavour that is stronger than you may think. I brewed this tea for about 2 minutes as per the instructions. The brew was a lot darker than I expected, not as dark as black tea but more reminiscent of green tea, although with a different aroma. The flavour is not only smooth but has many different notes which make themselves known as you sip this tea, from nutty to almost grassy, but never bitter. I did not add any sugar or milk to this tea, as is traditional, I don’t think it needs any either – the subtle flavours are enough by themselves.
Good to know
White tea does contain caffeine, some people believe it has less than black tea, although it varies depending on the specific blend – also people tend to steep black tea for longer, thereby imparting more of the caffeine into the brew. White is also thought to have slightly more antioxidants than other teas due to its minimal processing.
